Magnetic Islands and Disruption Mitigation – Training Services provides in-depth knowledge of magnetic instabilities in confined plasmas and their role in limiting fusion performance. The course covers the physics of magnetic island formation, neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs), and their impact on plasma confinement and stability. Participants will explore diagnostic methods to identify island structures, along with active and passive control strategies such as electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD), resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs), and fast shutdown techniques. The training also emphasizes disruption mitigation systems, including massive gas injection (MGI) and shattered pellet injection (SPI), to protect fusion devices from thermal and mechanical damage. By the end of the program, learners will gain practical and theoretical insights into maintaining plasma stability and extending reactor operation lifetimes.
